Server Trust

How ATAP servers establish trust via TLS, DNSSEC, and audit credentials.

Server trust is established via WebPKI, DNSSEC, and VC-based attestations. ATAP does not define a custom trust hierarchy.

Default trust policy

LevelRequirements
0No TLS, self-signed, or DV certificate without DNSSEC
1Domain-Validated (DV) TLS + DNSSEC
2Organization-Validated (OV) or EV TLS + DNSSEC
3OV/EV + DNSSEC + audit VC (SOC 2, ISO 27001, or eIDAS)

DNSSEC is required for level 1 and above — without it, did:web resolution is vulnerable to DNS poisoning.

Server discovery

Every ATAP server publishes at https://{domain}/.well-known/atap.json:

{
  "atap_server": "1",
  "domain": "example.com",
  "api_base": "https://api.example.com/v1",
  "didcomm_endpoint": "https://api.example.com/v1/didcomm",
  "claim_types": {
    "ATAPEmailVerification": { "level": 1 },
    "ATAPPersonhood": { "level": 2 },
    "ATAPIdentity": { "level": 3 }
  },
  "max_approval_ttl": "P90D",
  "legal_entity": "Example Corp.",
  "jurisdiction": "DE"
}

Effective trust

An entity's effective trust is bounded by its server:

effective_trust(entity) = min(trust_level(entity), server_trust(entity.server))

A trust level 3 entity on a trust level 1 server has effective trust 1.

Verifiers may override the default trust mapping with their own policy but should document their criteria.
